Then there's also:

Pinnacle thinking - I'm the pinnacle of existence, inspiration to all. I don't need to change. Wow, I'm awesome.

Bug thinking - I'm just a bug, insignificant in the face of creation. I'm worthless and all I can do is repent, eat ice cream, and repent for eating ice cream.

I've come across people who run both of these, but I think they're just extreme faces of gap thinking, and the solution is still step thinking.

Thanks for pointing this out, Jon. Good stuff! ๐Ÿ™

great descriptions! I'm always searching for the balance between worthless and awesome. "I'm the pinnacle of existence" was a thought I've had never though, but maybe I'll try it on for size! You know, like when you're tuning a guitar, it's easiest to get the correct tension by adjusting downward from overtightened strings right?

I'm familiar with a similar teaching from the Tao Te Ching. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" or depending on the translation, it begins beneath your feet, where you are. (https://bookshop.org/p/books/tao-te-ching-lao-lao-tzu/9813037).

On first thought, what you refer to as the "bar" could represent what lies at the end of Lao Tzuโ€™s โ€œjourneyโ€, but if I understand correctly, in your Step thinking framework, rather than holding the idea of a bar, as if there were some goal post a giant gap away, we can think of the bar only as a general direction we're inspired to travel and every step in that direction is a joy. Is that how you think of it? Thank you.

I would love to hear more of what you have to say about social comparison bias, how it does or does not serve us, and what progress might look like in society. Maybe another article?

Great! If many more practised this we would get a better world with less pressure, depressions and overall more mentally healthy people. And if so we would have so much more love and kindness in our world. Fantastic and yet so simple tips!

Merry Christmas to you and your gang, we miss you!
